A California woman thought she won $2,000 from a scratch-off lottery ticket when it was actually a $2m jackpot. Ruby Evans bought the Instant Prize Crossword Scratchers ticket at a donut store in Compton.

Sweet Time Donuts will get $10,000

The California Lottery’s press release explains that Evans scratched the ticket in the parking lot and realized she had won, but was shocked when she went to claim her winnings. Instead of a $2,000 figure appearing on the lottery terminal screen, it was the top prize of $2m. As a result of selling the winning ticket, Sweet Time Donuts will get $10,000.

Evans appears to be lucky, having won two significant sums in the past. She got $100,000 through a different type of scratch-off card in 2013 and $5,000 more recently. Whenever she buys tickets at the donut store, other people tease her, asking if she has won enough. Evans plans to use the money from her latest win to pay bills, her mortgage, and to help out her daughters.
